That one customer in Austin who asked me to explain every single wire I ran
I was doing a service upgrade in an old house down in Austin, Texas about 6 months ago. The homeowner, this older guy named Dave, kept following me around and asking why I was running each wire the way I did. At first I thought he was just being nosy or trying to catch me messing up, but then he told me his dad was an electrician back in the 60s and he never got to learn from him. So I spent my lunch break showing him how we map out circuits and why we use certain gauges for different loads. He actually asked if he could take pictures of my panel layout before I closed it up. That stuck with me because usually homeowners just want the power on and don't care about the details, but this guy genuinely wanted to understand. Has anyone else had a customer who was more interested in the how than just getting the job done?

Hold up on that wire gauge thing. Honestly, I get what you were showing him and it's cool you took the time, but for a service upgrade most of the wire gauges are already set by the code for the amperage. It's not really about picking gauges for different loads on the fly, more like you just follow the chart for the panel size. Still, I bet showing him how you map out the circuits and keep them balanced was probably more useful anyway. Tbh that's the part most guys miss when they're just slapping stuff in. Ngl he probably walked away with a way better understanding of how the system actually works than half the apprentices I've seen.

Started doing the same thing a few years back with my nephew and it clicked way faster than just handing him a code book. Breaking down the load calc and showing him how you keep each leg under 50% really stuck with him.
