Update: Three-way switch wiring had me stumped until I drew it out
I was putting in three-way switches for a hallway and kept messing up the traveler wires. After a couple failed attempts, I grabbed some paper and drew the whole circuit. Seeing it on paper made the common and traveler roles click for me. Now I sketch a quick layout before any three-way job. But I'm curious about checking the wiring faster before sealing the boxes. How do you all verify your connections quickly? I could use some tips to save time on these installs.

Drawing it out is a SOLID start. I keep a cheap voltage tester in my pocket and touch each wire to confirm the common is hot in one position and not the other. This catch mistakes before the drywall goes up. For a quick check, I also label the wires with tape while the circuit is live but BREAKER off, so I don't mix them up later.

Honestly after reading willow_robinson's method I'd just add one thing. We all get fried staring at the same wires. I force myself to walk away for five minutes before the final check, comes back clear every time.
