Stripping boards first is a lifesaver. Snagged a voltage regulator from an old DVD player to fix my guitar pedal.

How much noise are we talking about? I've used similar parts without issues.

Actually, careful with that. DVD players usually have switching regulators, not linear ones. They can add a ton of noise into audio stuff like a pedal.
