Dropped $220 on a backup rope brake for the inspection cart, best money I've spent in ages
After that near miss in the Johnston building last spring where the cart slipped two floors, I finally bought the auto-lock unit and it caught a cable snap during a routine test run yesterday. Anyone else run these on older cars, or do you still trust the manual catch setup?

That auto-lock unit sounds like the kind of upgrade that pays for itself the first time it actually does its job. I've seen too many older cars where the manual catch gets gummed up or people just forget to set it, and that's when the fun starts. Once you go to the auto unit, it's hard to go back to trusting a latch you have to remember to flip. If anything, I'd say check the release mechanism every couple months, because those things can stick too, just less often than the manual ones. Good call spending the money before something worse happened.
