That 20-year-old governor rope on a Kone job snapped clean last Tuesday.

It was a routine inspection in a downtown office building, and the thing just gave out under a light test load. I had to shut the whole bank down for 8 hours to re-rope it. Anyone run into a sudden failure like that on gear you thought had years left?

Man that's rough. Had a similar thing happen last year on a 15 year old Otis in a medical building. Thought we had at least another 5 years out of those ropes based on the wear readings. But one of the governor ropes just started fraying bad on a random Tuesday morning. Had to scramble and pull a whole Saturday to get it sorted. The sudden failures always catch you off guard, especially when you've been watching the normal wear patterns.

It's like my old truck, @rayc89. The timing belt looked fine at 90,000 miles, but it snapped in a grocery store parking lot. You see it with appliances too, a washing machine motor that hums along for a decade then just quits on a full load. Makes you wonder what else is quietly ticking down, you know? We plan for the slow wear but never the sudden snap.
