A client in Miami pointed out my extraction technique was too aggressive

I mean, I'd been doing extractions the same way for like 5 years, pressing pretty hard to get everything out. This client just calmly asked, 'Does it usually leave marks for a week?' and showed me a photo from her last facial. It totally tipped me off that I was causing more post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than I realized. Has anyone else had a moment like that that made them completely change a core technique?

Wow, that's a real eye-opener. It makes you wonder what other habits we don't question. Like, were you taught that hard pressure was the only way to get a clean pore? Did you ever feel a client flinch but just think they were being sensitive?

Did I ever feel a client flinch and just think they were sensitive? Oh man, I hate to admit it but yes, I totally did that back in the day. It's embarrassing looking back because I was basically ignoring their pain thinking I was helping. I guess I figured a little discomfort was just part of getting a good result. Now I realize if someone flinches, that's a clear sign to back off, not a test of their toughness.

My first boss swore you needed to squeeze until you saw blood... total myth. I cringe now thinking about it, and you're right @jessicad98, we just blamed the client for having thin skin. That whole generation of estheticians was taught some brutal techniques.
