Hit 6,500 unread emails in my inbox last Tuesday and that was my wakeup call to finally build a simple filter system.

I set up three rules in Gmail that auto-label and archive anything from newsletters, receipts, and social alerts, and now I see zero emails unless they're from real people or clients. Has anyone else faced a similar inbox nightmare and found a trick that actually stuck?

Yeah I've been there and honestly the Gmail filters only got me halfway. What really made the difference was a browser extension called Mailbutler that lets me set up auto-replies and reminders for the important stuff, combined with a strict inbox zero rule where I don't close my browser until every real email gets tagged or deleted. The key for me was admitting I'm never gonna read those newsletters, so I just unsubscribed from like 40 of them in one sitting and blocked the rest. Also I started using the snooze feature aggressively if an email needs a response later, and I set up a separate label for "follow up" that forces me to look at it once a day. Your mileage may vary but pairing filters with actual decluttering is what finally stuck for me.

Gotta admit I used to think inbox zero was just one of those productivity myths people flex about but never actually do. Your breakdown of unsubscribing in one big purge and using snooze like that really clicked for me though, might actually try it this weekend.
