My smart plug fried itself trying to run a space heater

It happened Tuesday night when the temp dropped below freezing, and I had to reset the whole circuit. Anyone know a safe wattage limit for those things?

Honestly, that's a scary situation. Smart plugs usually can't handle the high draw from space heaters at all, even the 15 amp ones. You really need to plug a heater directly into a wall outlet, not through any adapter or plug.

My 1500 watt space heater has been running off a power strip for three years now and nothing's happened. I get that technically you're not supposed to, but I think people online blow this one way out of proportion. The strip is rated for 15 amps and the heater only pulls about 12.5. As long as you check the ratings it's fine.
