The week my old laptop finally died and I learned a backup lesson

Last Tuesday my 8 year old Dell just wouldn't boot up. I was right in the middle of paying bills online and had this sinking feeling in my stomach. Turns out the hard drive gave out completely and I hadn't backed anything up since December. I lost two months of recipe bookmarks and a bunch of photos from my niece's birthday party. A buddy told me about a free backup tool called Veeam that saved what was left on the drive. Now I have an external hard drive that auto-backs up every Sunday at 3am. Has anyone else had a close call like that and what do you use to keep your stuff safe?

Man, sorry about your laptop man. Backup lessons are always learned the hard way, right? I had a similar scare a couple years ago and now I do the 3-2-1 rule religiously - three copies of data, on two different types of media, with one copy offsite. For me that means an external drive plus Backblaze for cloud backup, only like $9 a month and it runs constantly in the background. The auto backup schedule you got going is clutch though, just make sure you test restoring a file every once in a while cause backups are useless if they don't actually work lol.
