Wasted $120 on a 'smart' thermostat that made my house colder

Bought one of those top-rated smart thermostats last winter thinking it would save me money on heating. After three months of fiddling with the app and scheduling, my gas bill went up $40 because the thing kept turning the heat off when I was actually home. Turns out the motion sensor couldn't detect me sitting still in my living room chair. I finally ripped it out and put my old manual dial thermostat back in, and my house has been comfortable ever since. Has anyone else had better luck with a specific brand that actually works right?

Used to think smart thermostats were the future tbh but your story 100% changed my mind. Sounds like a nightmare, especially paying more for a colder house.

Oh man, I feel your pain! I had the exact same issue with a pricey smart thermostat that kept thinking I was a ghost when I was just sitting still. I switched to a basic programmable one from Honeywell that lets me set schedules manually (no motion sensors, thank goodness), and it's been rock solid for over a year without any tricks.
