People forget how few ways women had to build their own status back then... a secret recipe was something she owned and controlled completely. It wasn't about the oregano, it was about having a piece of identity that made her special in her own home. That "secret" gave her a kind of power and respect from her family. Guarding it was probably one of the few purely selfish things she felt allowed to do.
