My aunt in Savannah makes her cornbread with a cup of buttermilk and a tablespoon of bacon grease.

I just visited her last month and finally wrote it down, but does anyone else's family have a secret ingredient like that for a basic recipe?

Oh my grandma always used to save the bacon grease for her cornbread too... it just makes it taste like home. I finally started doing it myself and it's a total game changer.

Seriously, that old school trick is the best. I read somewhere that the fat carries all those smoky flavors way better than butter or oil. It's like the secret ingredient that makes everything taste richer.

My buddy's mom used lard, total @the_claire vibe.
