My aunt insisted I was ruining my chili by adding cocoa powder, she was right

I always put a tablespoon of dark cocoa powder in my chili recipe. Thought it gave it that deep richness everyone talks about. My aunt told me at a family cookout last July that it was just covering up bad seasoning. I ignored her for months. Then I made a batch without it and actually tasted the cumin and smoked paprika for the first time. Now I only use cocoa if I'm doing a mole style chili. Anyone else had a relative call them out on a misplaced ingredient?

It is funny how we add stuff to hide what is actually missing.

Right? Its like putting a fancy bumper sticker on a broken car. We pile on all these extras to distract from the fact the foundation is cracked. Social media bios are the worst for this, everyone bragging about their side hustles when theyre drowning in debt. Or that person who fills their house with expensive decor but cant fix the leaky roof. It's just easier to cover up the emptiness than deal with it.
