My cousin called my grandma's cornbread 'too sweet' and it made me mad

We were at a family cookout last weekend and I brought my grandma's classic cornbread, the one with the exact 1/3 cup of sugar she always used. My cousin from out of state took a bite and said, 'This is more like cake, way too sweet for cornbread.' It really got under my skin because that recipe is a direct link to my grandma, who passed away five years ago. For me, the sweetness is the whole point, it's the taste of home. I guess I never realized how defensive I could get over a family recipe. Has anyone else had a family dish criticized by someone who just doesn't get it?

Honestly just tell them it's meant to be sweet, that's how your grandma made it. Tbh some people just don't get family recipes.

What did you end up saying to your cousin? I had a friend call my mom's potato salad bland once and I just said it's the real recipe to me, so now they know. Sometimes stating it plain like that shuts it down.
