My cousin said my grandma's pie crust was 'just fine' over the holidays.
She didn't know the 'secret' was using frozen butter and a splash of vinegar, which I'd always thought was common knowledge. Has anyone else had a family cooking trick they assumed everyone knew?

Funny story, I once told my own grandma her pie was "pretty good" and she gave me a stare that could curdle milk. Took me a decade to live that down. @logantaylor is spot on about the cold everything approach, I've started chilling my rolling pin too because apparently I can't be trusted not to warm things up with my bare hands. My crusts are still hit or miss, but at least now they're not actively offensive.

That vinegar trick is the real deal, keeps the crust flaky. My mom always swore by using ice water too, not just cold water from the tap. She'd have the bowl and the cutter in the freezer for a bit before starting. I thought everyone did that until I saw a friend make dough with room temperature everything. The result was tough as leather, honestly. Some family tricks just become gospel without you even realizing it.
