Wait, she was using lard? That's wild to me. Butter just makes everything taste better, so you definitely did the right thing. Recipes are meant to be improved.

Lard and shortening are totally different things though lol, lard is actually closer to butter since it's animal fat.

She swore by shortening for flakiness, but I tried it with butter once and never went back. The flavor is just deeper, you know? Like, it actually tastes like something instead of just being crispy.
