My grandma's pie crust recipe failed for the first time in 40 years
I tried to make my grandma's famous apple pie for Thanksgiving using her handwritten recipe, but the dough came out crumbly and wouldn't hold together. After three tries and a phone call to my mom, she said I used cold butter that was too firm because my fridge is set way colder than grandma's old one. Anyone else run into issues with old family recipes not working with modern appliances?

Man that is such a classic "old recipe vs new kitchen" trap, I swear it happens with everything from bread to cookies once you swap out an old gas stove for a modern electric one. My mom had the same problem with her biscuit recipe, turned out her old oven ran way hotter than the reading showed, so she was actually baking at a way different temp for years. It's like these recipes have a whole set of invisible rules that only make sense in the kitchen they were born in.

Oh goodness, that explains why my first attempt at grandma's cornbread looked more like a hockey puck than a side dish.
