My great-aunt's biscuit recipe called for lard, but I only had butter
I tried it anyway and they came out flat and tough, nothing like hers. Has anyone successfully swapped fats in an old recipe like that?

Oh for sure, butter is its own whole thing. Tbh I tried to swap it out in cookies once and it was a total disaster, they just spread out into one flat mess. Honestly nothing else gives you that same flavor or makes things as crispy. It's just not the same at all.
