That baking soda trick for beans actually works, I was skeptical

I kept getting hard beans no matter how long I soaked them, tried everything. Read somewhere online about adding a pinch of baking soda to the soaking water before cooking, thought it was nonsense. Used a half teaspoon for a pound of pinto beans last Tuesday and they were soft in under 2 hours. Has anyone else tried this or got a better method?

Buddy of mine tried it and said the beans came out tasting like a chemistry experiment.

Did you notice any weird aftertaste from the baking soda or did it cook out clean? I've been tempted to try it but scared it'll make em taste like soap.
