Hot take: my best shoeing job got ruined by a fresh gravel driveway

Shoed a client's horse near Lexington last Tuesday. Perfect fit, clean finish, nails all set. Horse walks out of the barn, steps onto the new crushed limestone they just dumped there. Slipped on a loose rock and chipped the edge of the right front shoe. I spent 20 minutes resetting it in the dirt. Client wasn't mad but I felt stupid. Anyone else deal with bad ground conditions messing up your work right after you finish?

...and the thing is, that crushed limestone is probably worse than gravel for those fresh shoes because it moves around so much under their weight. I've seen it happen with a horse that was perfectly balanced in my new keg shoes, took one step on that loose stone and the whole foot shifted sideways. It's like they specifically choose the worst possible moment to put down a new driveway or top dress their arena. Sometimes I wonder if they do it on purpose just to mess with us.

Isn't limestone actually better for grip than gravel though?
