I finally fixed a chronic quarter crack with a simple rasp trick
Had a mare with a quarter crack that kept re-opening for like 8 months. Tried all kinds of patches and glue but it just kept coming back. Then a old-timer at the Michigan Draft Horse Show told me to rasp the wall at a 45-degree angle just above the crack to relieve pressure. Been 4 months now and the hoof is solid - no more cracking. Anyone else got a weird fix that worked better than the textbook method?

Wait, did you file the wall at 45 degrees toward the coronary band or away from it? I heard a guy at the local feed store say that trick works but only if you do it right, otherwise it makes the crack worse.

You sure about that advice from the feed store guy @jason328? Filing toward the coronary band at that angle is just asking for the crack to split all the way up, everyone I've seen try it ends up with a mess. Better off just keeping the wall flat and letting the hoof grow out natural instead of chasing some shortcut.
