I was trimming a draft horse for a friend in Boise and he pointed out my angle.

He said, 'You're cutting that heel like you're scared of it, it's making the toe too long.' I realized I'd been holding the knife at maybe 15 degrees for years because an old boss yelled at me for cutting too deep once. The next day I tried a more aggressive 30 degree angle and the breakover was way cleaner. Has anyone else had a simple comment totally shift a basic habit?

But is a slightly longer toe on a draft horse really that big of a deal?

Wow, that comment about "one offhand comment can expose a bad habit" really hit me hard... I had a farrier tell me once that my horse's toes were just a tad long and I was like "eh it's fine" but turns out it can mess up their whole stride and joints over time. I mean, a slightly longer toe might not seem like a big deal in the moment but it changes how the whole foot lands and puts stress on tendons and stuff. It's one of those things where a tiny thing adds up to a big problem down the road. I'm honestly a little shook that something that seems so minor can cause so much damage.

Ngl it's wild how one offhand comment can expose a bad habit you didn't even know you had. Happens with driving or cooking too, you just get stuck in a routine.
