Just finished my 500th shoeing job since opening my own shop
It hit me when I was cleaning up after a big draft horse this morning. How many of you have hit a number that made you stop and look back?

I hit 300 last fall and it was weird. I was just stacking old horseshoes in the back and realized I'd filled a whole barrel. Made me think about all the different barns and weird gaits I've seen over the years. Kinda proud but also tired just thinking about it lol.

Actually those aren't horseshoes in the barrel, that's a common mix-up. Horseshoes are metal, but the ones you're stacking are likely used farrier rasps or maybe just old keg shoes that haven't been shaped yet. I've got a bucket of those myself from back when I was apprenticing with an old-timer in Vermont who'd toss everything in a pile. He had like 400 of 'em lined up along his shed wall, called it his "wall of shame" for all the bad shoeings he'd fixed. But a barrel full is a real nice way to mark time in the trade.
