Realized my forge welding took 4 hours longer than it should have yesterday

I was trying to stack a pair of shoes for a client in Fort Collins and kept getting cold shuts at the weld line. Turned out I was running my forge about 150 degrees too low the whole time. How do you guys dial in your forge temp when you're in a hurry and don't have a pyrometer handy?

Been there. My pyrometer broke mid job and I was just guessing the whole time.

You really think a few hours lost on a weld is worth sweating over... It's not like the shoes are going anywhere.
