Shoutout to the old timer who told me to check my rasp for burrs before every horse

I found out at a clinic in Boise last spring that a worn out rasp can leave the hoof wall jagged and cause 3 extra minutes of filing per foot, and now I replace mine every 10 horses instead of whenever I remember.

You bet. I had a farrier chew me out years ago for the same thing. He showed me how the teeth on a worn rasp just skate across the hoof instead of cutting clean, and you end up pushing way harder than you should. I was burning through rasps way too fast until a guy at a tack swap told me to flip them over and use the other side for a while before tossing them. Now I keep a spare in my truck and swap out sooner than I used to, it saves a lot of elbow grease in the long run.
