A client in Portland told me pockets ruin a dress's line
She was adamant that any pocket, even a welt, makes a silhouette look bulky. I had to show her a muslin sample with hidden side-seam pockets to prove they could be nearly invisible. Has anyone else had to argue for functional design over pure form?

It's a weird holdover from old fashion rules that treats women's clothes like sculpture instead of something to live in. The right pocket placement disappears into the side seam if you do it right. It's more about bad design than pockets themselves being the problem. Some clients just have this deep fear of adding any bulk, even when it's not really there. You have to show them the proof because the idea is so stuck in their head. Good on you for making the sample to change her mind.

Honestly, showing a sample is the only thing that works sometimes. Had a client who was sure a pocket flap would look huge on her coat. I cut one from the actual fabric and just pinned it on the flat pattern piece. She could see it was just a flat layer, not some big lump. It clicked when she held it. That visual proof beats any argument you can make.
