Just read that a standard sewing pattern wastes over 15% of the fabric yardage

I was looking at a sustainability report from the London College of Fashion and it said most commercial patterns are cut in a way that leaves huge scraps. I've been designing for years and never thought to calculate my own waste. Has anyone switched to zero-waste pattern drafting and seen a real cost difference?

Just tried to wrap my head around my own pattern waste last month and let's say the results were not great for my ego (or my fabric budget). I found a bunch of my old layouts and it was honestly kind of embarrassing how much I was tossing. Switching to even a more mindful layout, not full zero-waste, has made a noticeable dent in how much fabric I buy now. It's a bit of a puzzle at first but it starts to click.

Isn't it funny how that awareness creeps up on you in all sorts of areas? I've noticed the same thing with just about everything I buy, not just fabric. When you start paying attention to what actually gets used versus what gets tossed, you realize how much waste is built into our daily routines. @wyatt980, I get the time cost argument, but for me the real time savings came when I stopped having to run to the store for replacement materials every other week.

Honestly, the time cost kills any savings for me.
