Megan from the sewing circle said I should stop using cheap thread for my zippers
She told me six months ago that cheap poly thread would always snap on denim zippers, but I thought she was just being picky and kept using the $1.50 spools from the craft store. After three zippers broke on two different jackets I finally switched to a $7 spool of gutermann and the last zipper held perfect even through the thickest seam. Has anyone else had a specific person's advice about something like thread or interfacing that you wished you'd listened to sooner?

Bet your bottom dollar that $1.50 thread was the problem, not your technique or the zipper itself. Sometimes paying up feels like a scam until the cheap stuff fails every time.

Had a jacket zipper blow out on me last winter. Used cheap Coats & Clark from a dollar store. Never again. Switched to Gutermann heavy duty for the repair and that same zipper is still going strong after a dozen washes. The tension is more consistent, doesn't fray, and the stitch quality holds up way better under stress.
