Saw this jacket in a Tokyo thrift store that changed how I think about pockets

Was browsing a shop in Shimokitazawa last month and found this old military surplus jacket with like 12 pockets placed in weirdly useful spots, not just slapped on. I've been sketching jackets all week trying to copy that layout, anyone else found random vintage pieces that inspired your designs?

12 pockets? You serious? I had a similar moment with an old German army field jacket from the 80s, had a pocket stitched right into the front lining that held a notebook and pen perfectly without bulking up the whole front. It also had this weird little internal pocket inside the main left pocket that I thought was a mistake at first but it turned out perfect for keeping keys separated from everything else. That hidden pocket for a map or documents near the chest changed my whole understanding of how a jacket should carry gear without making you look like a walking vestibule.

The hidden chest pocket is a game changer. I picked up a vintage Swedish army parka at a flea market and it has a similar pocket that zips horizontally instead of vertically. I thought it was a flaw at first but now I stash my phone there when I'm biking because it doesn't dig into my ribs. Also that little key pocket inside the main pocket is genius, I wish modern jackets would copy that instead of just slapping on more cargo pockets.
