Why does nobody talk about how hard it is to switch from hand sewing to a machine?

I used to hand sew every piece I made for like 3 years. Every seam, every hem, everything by hand. Last month I finally bought a basic Singer machine at a garage sale for 40 bucks. The speed change messed me up bad. I kept trying to hand crank the fabric through and my seams looked like a toddler drew them. How long did it take you guys to get comfortable on a machine?

My Singer sounds like a dying lawnmower.

Yo @rowanw31, I've been there for sure. First thing, check if the bobbin case is threaded right - I had one that sounded exactly like a dying lawnmower and it was just the bobbin tension being way off. Also try giving the hook area a good clean with a brush, sometimes lint build up makes that noise way worse. If that doesn't fix it, it might be the motor belt getting loose, which is a super easy swap if you can find the right size at a hardware store.
