Finally stopped setting posts in concrete after talking to a guy in Flagstaff
Ran into a contractor who told me he's been using crushed stone and gravel for 15 years on all his fence jobs. Said the drainage is way better and you can actually pull a post out later if you need to. Anyone else switch away from concrete or am I the last holdout?

Crushed stone sounds like a great way to have your fence fall over in the first windstorm (just kidding, maybe).

Crushed stone actually makes a better base than concrete in a lot of places around here. My neighbor used it for his fence posts four years ago during a drought and they haven't moved an inch. The key is tamping it down in layers, like 4 inches at a time, and using the right size stone, usually 3/4 inch. Concrete can crack and heave with frost, but gravel drains and settles evenly so it stays put.
