I keep seeing folks skip the gravel base under fence posts
Last spring I pulled out a stretch of fence that was set without any gravel and the bottoms were rotten mush after only three years. Has anyone else had to redo jobs where the original crew cut that corner?

Honestly that's exactly why you don't skip it. Water sits against the wood without gravel and just rots the post out in a couple years. Tbh I always pour a few inches of crushed stone in the hole and tamp it good, saves you from pulling rotten posts later.
