That cheap auger bit from Harbor Freight cost me a whole afternoon

Picked up a 12 inch auger bit for $18 last week thinking I'd save a few bucks. First post hole in rocky soil near my place in Nashville, the thing twisted so bad I had to dig it out by hand with a shovel. I ended up going back for the $45 one from the rental place, and it chewed through the rest of the holes in under an hour. Anybody else had luck with budget auger bits or am I just jinxed?

that cheap auger bit from Harbor Freight cost me a whole afternoon" - yep, been there. I grabbed a similar one for a fence job and same thing happened, twisted up on a rock about 6 inches down. I ended up drilling a pilot hole with a regular spade bit first, then using the auger bit. still took forever but at least it didnt get stuck. rocky soil is just rough on those budget bits, they really cant handle any kind of torque. the $45 one from the rental place is probably the way to go if you got more holes to do.

oh man, the twisted up on a rock part hit close to home... i did that exact same thing with a cheap bit from Lowes last spring. the bit just folded over like a cheap spoon. i tried your pilot hole trick after that but honestly my arms were so sore by the end i just gave up and rented the bigger one. totally worth it if you ask me, sometimes the cheap stuff just ain't worth the headache.
