The customer who wanted me to build a fence around a single tree
Last spring I had a guy in Spokane who insisted I put a 4-foot fence around this one giant oak in his backyard. He said it was to "protect the tree's personal space"… I thought he was joking. He even paid me $200 extra to make a little gate on it so he could go inside and talk to the tree. Has anyone else dealt with a customer who had a weird request like that?

Oh man, that's a new level of tree love right there. A fence with a gate so he can go have a chat with it? That's not a fence, that's a VIP enclosure for a leafy celebrity. Honestly, at least he paid you well for it, right? Maybe you should have offered a little welcome mat too.

Haven't you ever had something you just really cared about for no good reason? I mean, look, the guy clearly loves that tree more than most people love their pets. You're calling it weird, but I bet you've got some old shirt or coffee mug you're overly attached to. At least he's giving the tree some space and privacy, like he respects it as its own person. Doesn't that make the fence more thoughtful than stupid?
