Watched a crew in Austin use string lines on a 300 foot sloped run

I was on a site in Austin last Tuesday helping with a gate install and saw this crew setting a fence on a steep hill. They had a string line pulled super tight and were using a line level to check the grade every 8 feet. Blew my mind how straight their posts came out compared to my usual eyeballing method. Has anyone else tried string lines on a slope like that or do you just wing it?

String lines are great for keeping things straight but that method has one big flaw. A line level gets fooled by any sag in the line over 300 feet, especially on a slope. Those posts probably look straight from the side but I bet they're not plumb front to back. You're better off shooting grade with a transit or even a simple water level for that kind of run.

Tbh @amyr57 you're telling me a line level can sag that bad over 300 feet? That's wild.
