Bought a $90 kombucha kit that grew mold in 2 days
Followed the instructions exactly, kept it at 75 degrees in my pantry. The scoby looked fine but the whole batch turned fuzzy and green. What's a better starter method that won't waste cash?

Check if you really need a kit at all. My first batch came from a friend's extra scoby and a jar of store-bought plain kombucha, which cost maybe five bucks total. Sometimes the simplest method works just fine without all the fancy gear.

My buddy tried that and ended up with weird moldy sludge floating around.
