My mom always used rocks from the garden, just washed them off good. One time she grabbed one that looked fine but it had a soft spot and literally crumbled into mud inside her sauerkraut. Took forever to fish all those little gritty bits out.

Are you ME or something? Because I swear I did the same stupid thing with a $60 set of ceramic weights last month.
Seriously though, glass weights look SO pretty in the jar but they are basically pain in tiny, fragile packages. I dropped one on the kitchen floor and it exploded like a grenade, then I stepped on a piece of it in my bare feet the next morning. The other two I just lightly tapped against the counter while washing them and they cracked right down the middle.
Now I just use a ziploc bag filled with water as a weight. Costs zero dollars and you can't break it unless you lose your mind and stab the bag with a fork or something. My cheap self learned the hard way.
