Had to pick between an airlock and a blowoff tube for my first beer batch

Started my first 5 gallon batch of IPA last weekend. Everything was fine for the first 36 hours. Then the krausen went crazy and clogged my airlock. Had to swap it out for a blowoff tube at 2am. Lost maybe a quart of beer through the overflow but saved the batch. Fermentation is done now and it smells fine. Anybody else had to scramble mid-fermentation and switch setups?

Man, I used to think airlocks were fine but that 2am scramble totally changed my mind.

Bought myself a proper blow off tube setup after that happened once with a stout. Never looked back since. The mess alone taught me it's worth the few extra dollars and five minutes to swap out the airlock after the first couple days of active fermentation. Pop the tube into a jug of sanitizer and you can sleep through the night without worrying about your ceiling getting painted.
