Kombucha from my grandma's recipe went moldy after 3 weeks

I was so sure I had everything clean and right. My kitchen counter has been covered with jars for a month. But after 3 weeks, that weird fuzzy patch showed up on top. I dumped the whole thing and started over with a fresh SCOPE from the local brew shop. Has anyone else had success saving a batch that early or is it always a total loss?

Is it bad that I've definitely eaten yogurt that was older than 3 weeks and still called it breakfast? lol I had a batch go fuzzy once and I tried scraping the top off and keeping the rest, but it just got fuzzy again a few days later. I don't think there's really any saving it once you see that mold, the whole thing's already contaminated. Better to just toss it and start fresh like you did, I learned that the hard way too.

My last grandmother gave me a SCOBY that was over 20 years old and I still had to toss a batch once when it went fuzzy around week 4. I tried saving it by scraping the top and using more vinegar in the next brew, but @caleb_gibson is right that mold means it's already spread through the liquid even if you can't see it. Better to trust your gut and pitch the whole thing, especially with a new SCOBY from the shop you know is healthy.
