My kraut needed a new home and I picked a 2 gallon crock over a 5 gallon bucket

I had a huge batch of cabbage from my garden last month and needed to upgrade from my usual quart jars. The choice was a basic food grade bucket or a proper ceramic crock. I went with the 2 gallon crock from a local pottery shop for about $45. After 3 weeks, the kraut came out perfect, with no weird flavors from the clay. The weight system it came with kept everything submerged way better than my old plate and jar method. Has anyone else made the switch to a crock and noticed a difference in taste or ease?

Actually, cleanup on a crock is easier than a bucket in my experience. The smooth ceramic doesn't hold smells or stains like plastic can. A quick soak and rinse does it, no scrubbing. You ever notice how a bucket can get that cloudy film? That just doesn't happen with the clay.

Was the cleanup a lot harder than using a bucket?

Margaret99, have you actually tried cleaning a crock or are you just assuming it's harder?
