Talked to an old neighbor about his sauerkraut setup and it made me rethink my whole approach

Old Mr. Henderson down the street saw me hauling my crock inside last weekend and asked how I was doing my ferment. He showed me his setup in his basement, just a simple 5 gallon bucket with a weight he made from a dinner plate a brick. He said he's been doing it the same way since 1978 and never had a problem, but I bought a fancy airlock lid for 30 bucks and have been stressing over details. Made me wonder if I am overcomplicating things, has anyone else had a simpler setup work better long term?

I once saw @robinson.paul's collection and that brick still had crumbs from 1982 stuck to it.
