Rant: I thought the 'pay yourself first' thing was just a cheesy saying

Started putting $50 from every check into a separate account before paying bills, and after a year I had a real emergency fund. Anyone else find a simple rule that actually worked for them?

Yeah but that's just moving money around. Still got the same bills to pay. Feels like a mind trick.
