Serious question, my trip to Japan made me rethink my spending habits

I just got back from a week in Tokyo and it was eye-opening. I spent way more than I planned, especially on food and trains. Looking at my bank account, I saw I could have saved hundreds by planning better. For example, I bought daily train passes instead of a weekly one, which cost extra. Also, I ate at tourist spots when local places were cheaper and just as good. Now I'm putting money aside each month for future trips so I don't overspend. It's a money lesson I'll remember for all my big spends.

Buying train passes daily is a classic budget killer. I learned to look up pass options online before landing. Now I have more cash for trying actual local food.

Oh man, the "I'm tired and lost" tax is SO real. That's just the universe charging you for the privilege of finally finding your hotel after walking in a circle for 45 minutes. My budget once got absolutely murdered by a single "screw it" cab ride from Shinjuku station. Never again. Now I have a pass AND a backup snack so I don't make expensive, hungry decisions.

Last year I read a blog where someone tracked every yen spent in Kyoto for two weeks. They showed how much those little convenience store trips and last-minute taxi rides actually add up. @brown.victor is totally right about checking pass options online first, it's a game changer. My takeaway was to always budget an extra 20% for the "I'm tired and lost" tax, which always happens to me. Planning the big stuff leaves room for the random cool thing you find without wrecking your budget.
