Started a debate between wearing a suit vs business casual to my first interview, what did you pick and how did it go?

I wore a full suit to my first office interview and got told I was overdressed, but my friend wore khakis and a polo and they said he looked too casual, so which side is actually safer for a first job interview?

Dress shirt, tie, no jacket. That's my go to for first interviews. Shows effort without looking like you're going to a wedding. Got the job too. Sweat a little less without the jacket on.
