TIL talking to my boss like a peer in my first week backfired hard

Started a data entry job at a local insurance office last month and tried to joke around with my supervisor the same way I talk to my friends. She gave me this look and then pulled me aside to explain how that can come off as disrespectful - anyone else learn that lesson the hard way?

Tbh I used to think being casual with bosses was no big deal, but seeing how quick it went sideways for you changed my mind. A little formality goes a long way.

Two weeks into my first retail job I called my manager "dude" in front of a customer and she made me clean the bathroom for a whole shift. Never made that mistake again.
