Tried skipping the onboarding meeting to get a head start on actual work... big mistake

My first day at a marketing firm in Austin, I thought I'd be proactive and skip the 9 AM HR orientation to dive into my tasks. Turns out I missed the part where they handed out laptop encryption keys and now my whole week's work is locked behind IT support tickets. Has anyone else messed up by not sitting through those boring first day talks?

Wait, did they really hand out encryption keys at orientation? Most places I've worked just email you a link or have IT set it up before you even start. Sounds like your company might do things a little backwards, which is frustrating, but skipping orientation is almost always a bad move. I've seen people miss things like building security codes or parking permits because they thought they knew better. Usually those meetings exist for a reason, even if they feel like a waste of time.

Wait hold on... they HANDED OUT encryption keys? Like physical keys? At orientation? I thought you meant like a USB dongle or something but you literally mean keys? What year is your company living in? That's wild. I've never heard of anyone doing that in 2024. Most places just have IT push everything to your machine remotely before you even show up. But yeah missing that part would definitely screw you over hard. Hope you got it sorted eventually.
