Patching drywall with a sponge instead of sandpaper - game changer

I was fixing a hole in my living room wall last weekend and got so tired of dust everywhere (like a fine powder coating my whole TV stand). Someone on a YouTube channel called Home Repair Tutor showed this trick where you wet a kitchen sponge and lightly dab the joint compound smooth after it dries. No dust at all, plus it left a texture that blended right in with my existing wall. Has anyone else tried this method for small patches or am I late to the party?

Oh the "dabbing with a sponge" trick is a TOTAL game changer for sure. It's funny because I've noticed this pattern in a lot of household tasks lately - the best solutions are the ones that work WITH the problem instead of fighting it. Like with drywall dust, everyone's out here trying to HEPA filter the air and wear masks, but this just avoids making dust in the first place. Same thing with cleaning baseboards - I stopped using sprays and just use a slightly damp microfiber cloth now. Way less overspray and water streaks. It's like the whole idea of "don't create the mess you'll have to clean up later".

I mean, idk if it's really that deep honestly. Like yeah dabbing with a sponge is fine and all but it's not some life changing revelation. I get what you're saying about avoiding the mess but sometimes you just gotta get in there and clean things the old fashioned way. Maybe it's just me but I feel like people overthink this stuff sometimes when really it's just wiping a baseboard.
