Spent 4 hours trying to fix a sagging desk shelf before realizing my monitor stand was too wide
I kept shoving shims under the left side of my Ikea shelf for an entire afternoon until I noticed the monitor clamp was pushing the whole thing off balance, has anyone else fought a simple setup problem way too long because you ignored the obvious thing right in front of you?

Nah, I kinda disagree honestly. Sometimes the obvious thing is obvious because you already checked it and it was fine. I spent like 2 hours messing with my monitor arm the other day thinking the gas spring was busted when really I just had the tilt tension knob cranked too tight from a week ago. The actual problem was hiding in plain sight, but it wasn't the first thing you'd look at. Sometimes you gotta trust that you're not totally clueless and the real issue is just sneakier than you think.

Wait, @dakotab13, are you saying the obvious thing was actually something you already checked and it turned out to be fine but just needed a second look? For me, I finally just took a step back and looked at the whole setup from a different angle, like literally moved my chair to the other side of the desk. Turns out my shelf was just slightly warped from the heat near the window, so I flipped it around and the sag went away. Sometimes the fix is dumber than you think, like just rotating something instead of adding shims or tightening bolts. I feel your pain though, I wasted a whole Saturday on a wobble that was really just the floor being uneven.
