Appreciation post: the tile layout at the new library in Bend, Oregon

I was there last week and the main hall has this huge herringbone pattern with 12x24 porcelain planks. The grout lines are so tight and even I had to stop and stare for a solid five minutes. What's the trick for keeping that pattern perfectly square over such a large area without a single wobble?

Tile laying robots from the future" is probably right. They must have used a laser grid system for the whole floor. No human hand is that steady.

My local grocery store has self-checkout lanes that feel less precise than this tile work. We're outsourcing perfection to machines and calling it progress.

The trick is they hired a crew of tile laying robots from the future. My guy with a chalk line and a level could never.
