Can we talk about the $80 I blew on a second-hand Palm Pilot in 2005?

I thought it would organize my life, but the stylus kept getting lost and syncing it with my computer was a nightmare that made me go back to a paper notepad within a month. Anyone else have a 'smart' gadget from back then that just created more problems?

That BlackBerry story hits on something I see all the time now. It feels like every "smart" thing we buy is just a future problem waiting to happen. My fridge has a screen that needs updates and it's just a fancy box that keeps food cold. We keep adding layers of stuff that can break to things that worked fine before. It makes simple tasks, like writing a note or keeping a schedule, way more complicated than they need to be.

My 2003 BlackBerry bricked itself during a critical firmware update.

Firmware updates on old tech were always a gamble. You'd cross your fingers hoping the power wouldn't flicker. It's like the device knew the exact worst time to give up.
